New location of Alsodes tumultuosus Veloso, Iturra & Galleguillos, 1979 (Amphibia, Alsodidae) in the Andes Mountains of the O’Higgins Region, Chile
Nueva localidad para Alsodes tumultuosus Veloso, Iturra & Galleguillos, 1979 (Amphibia, Alsodidae) en la Cordillera de los Andes, Region de O’Higgins, Chile
Ramírez Álvarez, Diego
Alsodes tumultuosus Veloso, Iturra & Galleguillos, 1979 is an amphibian species endemic to Chile, described and known just from its type locality: the mountain streams in La Parva zone, Metropolitan region, central Chile. In this manuscript I report a new location for this species (the Andes Mountains of the O’Higgins Region, Chile), thus extending its current geographical range in about 100 kilometers southward. This finding suggests that we need to invest more efforts to clearly establish its conservation status in Chile.

Bioecological traits, abundance patterns and distribution extension of the soldierless Neotropical termite Compositermes vindai Scheffrahn, 2013 (Isoptera: Termitidae: Apicotermitinae)
Godoy, M. Celina
Laffont, Enrique R.
Coronel, Juan M.
The soldierless Neotropical Apicotermitinae is considered among the less known termite groups and its ecological relevance warrants studies about the biology and diversity of their species. We investigated the presence, distribution and relative abundance of the recently described species Compositermes vindai Scheffrahn, 2013 in natural and anthropized ecosystems of northeastern Argentina. Their nests and populations, as well as their presence inside other Termitidae mounds were examined. A standardized sampling protocol for termites was applied at five sites, with 100 x 2 m transects. Worker morphometric data from the surveyed localities are also reported. C. vindai was found in protected environments with little disturbance as well as in other altered ecosystems. The abundance patterns of C. vindai in the sampled areas varied from rare to intermediate and seemed not to be significantly affected by the environmental changes of the sites due to their land uses. The microhabitats occupied were mainly superficial soil and other Termitidae mounds (Cornitermes cumulans Kollar, 1832; Syntermes obtusus Holmgren, 1911 and Cortaritermes fulviceps Silvestri, 1901). C. vindai subterranean and diffuse nests showed a core surrounding by scattered chambers and tunnels extending into the surrounding soil. The small size colonies comprised workers, brachypterous nymphs and white immature larvae. Winged imagoes or primary reproductives were not found. These new records also extend the distribution of C. vindai across the biomes and ecoregions of the Neotropical ecozone and constitute the first reports of C. vindai from Argentina.

Dear readers of and contributors to Biodiversity and Natural History
Estimados lectores y colaboradores de Biodiversity and Natural History
Fernández, Leonardo D.
Zamora-Manzur, Carlos
Welcome to the first issue of Biodiversity and Natural History, a peer-reviewed, open-access and electronic journal published by the Centro de Estudios en Biodiversidad de Chile (Center for Studies in Biodiversity). The journal was created in 2009 under the name of Boletín de Biodiversidad de Chile with the aim of being a contribution to the dissemination of the Chilean biodiversity and natural history. True to its original purpose, the journal only published Chilean manuscripts in the early years. However, as time went by, the journal also started to receive and publish manuscripts coming from elsewhere in the planet. Accordingly, the journal gradually became an international channel for the scientific promotion and dissemination of biodiversity and natural history and thus, the name of the journal, as well as its original scope and goals were no longer representative.Because of this, in late 2014 the Editorial Board decided to change the original name of the journal to Biodiversity and Natural History a...

A new species of Aristias Boeck, 1871 (Amphipoda: Gammaridea: Aristiidae) from Aysén Region, Chile
Una especie nueva de Aristias Boeck, 1871 (Amphipoda: Gammaridea: Aristiidae) de la Región de Aysén, Chile
Pérez-Schultheiss, Jorge
A new species of Aristias is described from the Aysén Region, southern Chile. The new taxon is similar to A. antarcticus Walker, 1906; however differs of all previous record of this species in Southern Ocean by a combination of characters: the anterior margin of lateral cephalic lobe is straight; the upper lip is bounded by a pit, not distinctly projecting in front of the epistome; the posterior margin of the epimeron 3 is smoothly crenulated; the inner ramus of uropod 3 is shorter than outer ramus, while the lobes of the telson are subtriangular. A complete description and illustrations of Aristias linnaei n. sp. are provided, and its relationship with similar species is discussed.

For the first time, a larval individual of the cerambycid Acanthinodera cumingii (Hope, 1833) is reported to be living inside of an exotic bush stump. The growth of this larva had only been registered inside of 28 species of trees before (14 native and 14 exotic). This record extends its nutritional spectrum to a total of 29 woody species. The incidence of this bush on the distribution of the species is also discussed.

Breeding of the plain-mantled tit-spintail (Leptasthenura aegithaloides) in a variable hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma) nest in the Atacama Desert, Chile
Cerpa, Patrich
Medrano, Fernando
A strategy to avoid nest predation by various bird species is the selection of inaccessible sites or sites of actual danger for potential predators. In this sense nesting near a top predator may be an effective strategy to avoid nest predation, if this predator does not have a preference for eggs or nestlings of the first species. This note reports the first record of nesting by Plain-mantled Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura aegithaloides Kittlitz, 1830) in an active nest of the variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) and the nesting of the common diuca-finch (Diuca diuca Molina, 1782) nearby, during two consecutive years, in the Atacama Desert, Chile. This occurred during the “flowering desert” phenomenon in October of 2014 and September of 2015. We discuss hypotheses that may explain this biological association and its possible ecological implications.

Updated list of bats of Chile with comments on taxonomy, ecology, and distribution
Rodríguez-San Pedro, Annia
Allendes, Juan Luis
Ossa, Gonzalo
Bats are one of the least studied groups of vertebrates in Chile; however, in recent years the knowledge about them has advanced significantly due to the implementation of bioacoustics methods as well as by the recent inclusion of bats in environmental impact studies. Here we update the list of Chilean bats, raising to 13 the number of previously known species. In addition to updating the taxonomic status, incorporating a new species record for the country, also some ecological and behavioral information is presented, including significant extensions of the geographic ranges of several species. Finally, we identify and propose some directions for future research to be developed in the country that will allow deepening the knowledge of this group of mammals.

Anthopleura radians, a new species of sea anemone (Cnidaria: Actiniaria: Actiniidae) from northern Chile, with comments on other species of the genus from the South Pacific Ocean
Spano, Carlos
Häussermann, Vreni
A new species of sea anemone, Anthopleura radians n. sp., is described from the intertidal zone of northern Chile and the taxonomic status of the other Anthopleura species from the South Pacific are discussed. A. radians n. sp. is characterized by a yellow-whitish and brown checkerboard-like pattern on the oral disc, adhesive verrucae along the entire column and a series of marginal projections, each bearing a brightly-colored acrorhagus on the oral surface. This is the seventh species of Anthopleura described from the South Pacific Ocean; each one distinguished by a particular combination of differences related to their coloration pattern, presence of zooxanthellae, cnidae, and mode of reproduction. Some of these species have not been reported since their original description and thus require to be taxonomically validated. A. hermaphroditica and A. aureoradiata are synonyms considering the lack of differences seen between live specimens, museum collections and published records. A. radians could also be a junior synonym of A. minima, however, no type material was found for testing this hypothesis. Furthermore, it is crucial to designate neotypes for A. inconspicua, A. rosea and A. minima since there are no name-bearing types reported for these species.

Novel plumage aberrations in Paraguayan non-Passerine Birds, and the definition of a new plumage aberration unique to Psittacidae
Smith, Paul
Ríos, Sergio D.
Anomalous plumage colourations are reported for three species of non-passerine birds from Paraguay, Limpkin (Aramaus guarauna; Aramidae), Nanday Parakeet (Nandayus nenday; Psittacidae), and the Little Woodpecker (Veniliornis passerinus; Picidae). A leucistic Limpkin is the first published report of a colour anomaly for the family Aramidae. The colour aberration in N. nenday is hypothesised to be a result of an excess of red psittacofulvin pigments, which are unique to the Psittacidae. Although the mechanisms causing this colour aberration remain unknown, we suggest the term psittacofulvism for the phenotypic effect observed.

Herein, we described the first ever reported bite of Nabis argentinus Meyer-Dür 1870 on a human. The bite was registered in the locality Santa Rosa La Pampa, Argentina (36°37'29.02"S, 64°17'19.13"W). The insect was not provoked by the victim, and thus, the bite was probably not in self-defense. We therefore concluded that the insect bite the victim because it was searching for sources of hydration.

Health status evaluation of shallow coral reefs in Cahuita and Manzanillo, Costa Rica
Araya-Vargas, Alexander
Nova-Bustos, Nidya
Sedimentation, increased tourism, coral diseases and high ocean temperatures have become a permanent threat to reef areas worldwide. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the health status of the shallow reefs in Cahuita and Manzanillo, Limon, Costa Rica. A database, including species of all colonial sessile cnidarians and their known diseases, was created for the studied area. Subsequently, 15 transects were surveyed along the coast in 1-3 m deep bands of 10 x 1 m following the AGRRA V5.4 protocol. Of the 27 species found, 21 were reported from Cahuita and 23 from Manzanillo. The shallow coral reefs’ health status in both sites was good in terms of diseases, bleaching and mortality due to their low incidence. Sessile cnidarians’ species composition, colonies’ sizes and coverage were dominated by massive and lobate scleractinians such as Pseudodiploria clivosa and Siderastrea siderea. Macroalgal coverage was low (below 20%) and mostly represented by brown algae. Sea urchins’ densities were also low (below 1 ind/m2 except for Echinometra viridis in Manzanillo) and they trend to continue decreasing as the years go by.

Extension of the distribution range and new antecedents of the habitat of two frog species of the genus Alsodes Bell, 1843 (Amphibia, Anura, Alsodidae) in the Nahuelbuta Range, southern Chile
Flores Flores, Edgardo Patricio
Two frog species of the genus AlsodesBell, 1843 are currently found in the Nahuelbuta Range (southern Chile): A. barrioiVeloso, Díaz, Iturra and Penna, 1981 and A. vanzolinii(Donoso-Barros, 1974). A. barrioiis considered endemic to the Nahuelbuta Range. A. vanzolinii, by contrast, exhibit a wider geographical distribution than A. barrioiand thus, it can be also found outside of that mountain range. The present study reports an extension of the distribution range for both frogs in continental Chile. Herein, the geographical distribution of A. barrioi is extended 45 km to the north and 75 km to the south of its previously known geographical distribution (the Nahuelbuta Range). Moreover, the geographical distribution of A. vanzoliniiis extended 16 km to the north and 12 km to the south of its previously known geographical distribution. These findings demonstrate that both frog species exhibit a wider geographical distribution than previously thought. Even more important, they show that that A. barrioi is not endemic to the Nahuelbuta Range. These findings therefore suggest that it is needed to invest more efforts in identifying more populations of these frogs and in characterizing their habitats, specially if we consider the multiple threats faced by these both species.

Extractive mining is vital for technological development in the world where Chile ranks first as a world copper exporter. However, this activity generates tailings deposits and emergency pools with extremely toxic and acid waters, which are used by many species of birds, generally causing the death of numerous individuals. Teck CDA designed a system of suspended colored plastic flag lines located over the emergency poolsand its effectiveness was evaluated as a strategy to avoid the use of pools by waterfowl and reduce mortality. Between 2011 and 2017 a monitoring program was implemented for the birds that use the emergency pools, clear pools and the adjacent tailing dam. Our results indicated that during the period using colored flag lines, the death of any individual of some species of bird that could potentially interact with the pools was not observed. It is concluded that the system of colored plastic flags lines over the copper leaching emergency pools, were effective in avoiding the use of toxic pools and minimizing the deaths of waterfowl.
